WHAT IS LIGHT THERAPY?

Originally developed to heal skin tissues of astronauts to keep them healthy in space – light therapy has now advanced to offer visible skin benefits to ordinary people down here, without the space suits.

Used in modern treatments all around the world, it’s a proven tool technology used to speed up cell regeneration leading to skin repair and radiance. Light therapy can be really powerful, and what’s really great about it is different wavelengths offer different benefits as they penetrate your skin at different depths.

Ranging from skin rejuvenation, treating acne, stimulating collagen and elastin, minimising redness and wrinkles, rosacea, sun damage, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, sensitive and inflammatory conditions, to wound healing and even scarring. Take a pick! With few to no contraindications, it’s no wonder that’s where skincare is headed. Proven technology: safe, natural, painless, no side effects.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT LIGHTS AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

There are many different LED lights (with different wavelengths) ranging from violet to blue, green, yellow and red, all offering different healing properties and penetrating the skin at different levels.

Let's focus on the 3 most common lights used in home devices which are Blue, Red and Infrared.

Blue light (415nm- 465nm) – Clears acne and breakouts
Known for its effectiveness in killing acne-causing bacteria under the skin, blue light reaches where creams & lotions don't - and heals skin from within. Exposure to blue light spectrum triggers a photodynamic response with p.Acnes bacteria, which in turn effectively destroys them using your body’s own defence mechanism. This ultimately prevents bacteria ever reaching the surface of the skin, leading to a reduction in skin inflammation the natural way. The light’s ability to help balance sebum production also works for acne prevention.

Red light (630nm) - Calms and plumps the skin
Red light therapy used in skin treatment focuses on rejuvenation. In other words, it promotes the renewal of skin cells through the stimulation of collagen. Because it penetrates right into the skin, it is more effective in boosting its condition and repairing at the source, resulting in a plumper, more radiant complexion.

Infrared light (830nm) – Boosts collagen and elastin
This is the most deeply absorbed wavelength from all the other colours in the spectrum. Infrared light used in skincare contributes to tissue repair and has calming effects on damaged or sensitive skin. Due to its ability to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin and increasing the cell renewal process, it promotes faster healing and supports smoother, younger-looking skin.

IS LIGHT THERAPY SAFE?

Unlike other types of light therapy, LEDs do not contain ultraviolet rays. Therefore, they’re safe for regular use. LED light therapy doesn’t cause burns compared to anti-aging treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy. You shouldn’t use LED light therapy if you take certain prescriptions such as accutane or if you’re experiencing skin rashes. Please always refer to your healthcare professional for advice if you are under treatment before using any light therapy devices. When using a at home LED device always read the instructions.

HOW DO I KNOW IF A LIGHT THERAPY DEVICE WILL WORK?

When choosing the right blue, near-infrared and red light therapy light device, you want to select a device that’s long-lasting, has a great warranty, is well-manufactured, and most importantly, one that offers the correct wavelengths at the right power density. Specifically, blue light in the narrow ranges of 415-465nm is clinically proven to reveal fresh looking skin. In term of red light and near-infrared light, most research show benefits if devices have used wavelengths in the narrow ranges of 630-680nm and 800-880nm. Therefore make sure the device you are looking at buying fit into the above criteria.

ARE ALL LIGHT THERAPY DEVICES THE SAME?

They are not. With the wide variety of LED face masks in the market, it’s very important to find the best product for you.

Safety is a priority.
Look for reputable manufacturers, retailers and those backed by professional experts such as dermatologists and products with sufficient genuine user reviews. Ensure the device offers integrated eye protection and is either FDA cleared on in the process or getting FDA clearance.

Colours and Wavelengths
Each wavelength of light has its own specific skin benefits. Different wavelengths of the visible light spectrum correspond to different colours of LED light and penetrate the skin to different depths. Depending on how deeply they penetrate, LED lights are thought to have different healing effects. Pick a device that offers the wavelengths your skin needs:
• Red- Skin prone to redness and uneven skin tone
• Near Infrared- Mature skin
• Blue- Skin prone to blemishes and imperfections

Treatment Modes
Some devices offer a single colour treatment mode. The more comprehensive versatile LED masks offer multiple treatment modes with a combination of different wavelengths and adjustable intensity levels to suit your skin’s needs. Researches have shown that a combination of wavelengths, at the same time offers greater efficacies. When a treatment mode includes different wavelengths treatment at different sequences (say first Red and then Blue) that provides convenience for users instead. The key here is to choose a LED face mask with modes that suits your lifestyle and the specific LED colours you need.

Numbers of LED diodes and their grade
Here, both quantity and quality matter. LED treatments through consistent use yield amazing long term results. Look for masks that are durable, uses medical-grade LED lights.

Price
Price often correlates to the number of LED lights, the grade of the LED lights and the material used in the mask. Think about the price you have to pay at professional beauty clinics for a phototherapy (light) facial. By doing this at home, you save money over time. It is worthwhile to equip yourself with a professional-grade one.

Mask Fit
Our preference is face-shaped LED masks such as our LUSTRE® ClearSkin RENEW Pro Facewear. This form of LED mask is more suited to the home use environment as the mask conforms to the contour of the face allowing less light leakage. When compared to the flat LED boards or the arch shape LED device, the face-shape ones allow users to lay down comfortably during the 10 to 20 mins of treatment time and saves storage space. Most importantly, this design does not affect other people in the same household and avoid them staring into or disturbed by the bright lights.

WHAT TYPE OF LIGHT THERAPY IS BEST TO CLEAR THE SKIN?

LED Blue light basics

Acne naturally produces porphyrins, which make the bacteria visible when we shine a special light called a Woods Light (a longwave UV light). When porphyrins are exposed to blue light, they break up, releasing singlets of oxygen, which target the Acnes bacteria.

Acne naturally produces porphyrins-LUSTRE ClearSkin

Specifically, blue light at 415 nm is clinically proven to destroy the bacteria.

Acne begins to clear and continued blue light use can help reduce P. acnes growth and stop new spots from forming.

Understanding how Lustre® ClearSkin works

How Blue Light technology works

LUSTRE® ClearSkin emits blue light at a wavelength of 415nm and does not contain any ultraviolet rays, which can damage skin and lead to accelerated aging.

When used, LUSTRE® ClearSkin promotes a natural skin response and produces Protoporphyrin IX, which results in the destruction of the Cutibacterium Acnes bacteria.

Regular use of the LUSTRE® ClearSkin device clears spots you already have and prevents new ones from forming. Visible improvements can be seen in two weeks.

FOLLOW THE ADVISED TREATMENT FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS:

For best results, complete the full treatment course—up to 12 weeks. If you see results quickly, that’s great, but it’s important to continue with treatment since the blue light works cumulatively, which means you’ll see more benefits the more regularly you use the device.
